Alan Norman Smith (OS 1947)
Alan was the second of three brothers, sons of Nora and Hubert Smith who was a governor for some years.
His working life was spent in education as primary school teacher, headmaster, lecturer in education at Hereford College of Education and finally as lecturer and moderator at Newcastle University.
He taught at Stockport Grammar School where, as a pupil, he had been head of house and a successful all-round sportsman, representing the school at football, cricket, tennis and fives. He played for the Old Stopfordians as a very effective and robust right-back.
After his retirement he enjoyed playing golf in a straightforward and effective style and, as always, as with all his sport, he played with humour and courteous ferocity.
He moved to Morpeth in 1964 where he enjoyed a busy life through his golf, rotary club and as founder member of a very active walking group.
