Outdoor Education

Pupil climbing up a rock face in the sun

From mountain biking to orienteering and kayaking to climbing, there is something for the most adventurous pupils at Stockport Grammar School.

The School has a long history of taking pupils on hiking excursions, activity weekends, camping and ski trips. This, teamed with the large number of pupils that participate in the school’s Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, means that the majority can take advantage of the outdoor education opportunities on offer. We are delighted to be able to offer pupils at Silver and Gold Level the opportunity to complete their expeditions walking, canoeing or mountain biking.

We offer mountain biking or climbing trips most weekends from September to June, with weekend trips to Wales and Scotland for mountain biking. There is also a week-long climbing trip to Spain each year. Pupils also compete against other schools in climbing competitions such as the Manchester School’s. Girl’s mountain biking club is growing in popularity, and also has a stand-alone weekend trip. A large number of our Second Year pupils enjoy a week of water-based activities in Wales each year.

Pupils who choose to study GCSE and A-level PE can use climbing as one of their chosen sports and climbing is offered as part of our PE/Games programme from Second Year. This is alongside our very popular climbing clubs.

Pupils can be awarded Colours and Commendations for their commitment to and skills in archery, fencing, climbing, mountain biking and kayaking each year.

The School offers a very popular ski trip every other year and First Year pupils enjoy the opportunity to join a Bushcraft trip in the summer term.
