Dazzling production of Chicago

Pupils dazzle during a production of Chicago

The talents and hard work of our actors, musicians, dancers and stage technicians came together beautifully to create dazzling performances of Chicago, SGS’s 2020 musical production.

Holly Buckley as Roxie Hart, Grace Shropshire as Velma Kelly, Cam Wylie as Billy Flynn and Gabriel Keeble as Amos led a cast that truly sparkled as they sang, danced and acted their way through such classic numbers as “All That Jazz”, “Cell Block Tango”, “Mister Cellophane” and “Razzle Dazzle”.

Their talents were matched by the musicians in the orchestra who, along with the pupils on stage, received a standing ovation. A dedicated team of pupils and staff brought together lighting, make-up, props and all the other back stage essentials to create a perfect theatrical experience.

Directed by Head of Drama Mr Matt King-Sayce, and with musical direction from Director of Music Mr Michael Dow and choreography by Dance teacher Mrs Abi Downing, Chicago was a true Drama, Music, Dance collaboration which took months of dedication to prepare.

Fourth Year Charlie Harrison enjoyed his role in the Chicago chorus, saying: “Mr King-Sayce led the acting rehearsals and it was fascinating to see his ideas being brought to life on stage, especially the busy opening scene in the nightclub and the court room scene, which was challenging but so rewarding when we got it right in the end. It involved spoken lines as well as many musical interludes and took lots of rehearsal time to perfect but, once we had, it felt amazing!”

Although sadly due to Covid-19 restrictions the cast could not perform to full audiences, the pupils and staff who were fortunate enough to attend the in-school performances were amazed by the exceptional standard of the production.
