Double coding delight for our marvellous mathematicians
Marvellous mathematicians at Stockport Grammar School are celebrating a prestigious code-breaking double after winning both the Alan Turing Cryptography Competition and the National Cipher Challenge.
Pupils were victorious in the Alan Turing Cryptography Competition, a national contest organised by the School of Mathematics at the University of Manchester.
The competition follows the story of two young cipher sleuths, Mike and Ellie, as they get caught up in a cryptographic adventure ‘The Tale of the Morphogenesis Mystery’.
New chapters are released over six weeks, each with a fiendish code to crack. Points are earned by cracking each code and submitting your answer.
Out of over 1,000 teams, the all-female Stockport Grammar team, Pythag’R’Us, were crowned as winners after picking up the most points across the six chapters and the epilogue.
The success follows on from pupils from Fifth Year and Sixth Form bagging the top team prize at The National Cipher Challenge. The girls and boys, who called themselves Pythag’R’Back, competed against over 3,500 teams at the University of Southampton and were presented with their award at Bletchley Park, the once top-secret home of the World War Two codebreakers.
The school’s strong co-educational ethos gives both girls and boys the opportunity to thrive across the full range of subjects including Science, Technology and Maths.
Head of Mathematics, Mr Greig Frankland, said: “The Maths department is always keen to offer additional opportunities to take part in individual and team competitions and there is a real buzz around the place.
“Resilience and determination to succeed were shown by our cryptographers in the Alan Turing Competition. Out of over 1,000 teams for one of ours to win the competition overall was phenomenal and completes the ‘Cryptography Double’.
“Less than 50 teams completed all six challenges and four of our teams were successful in doing that. The Mathematics Department are very proud of what our pupils have achieved – it reflects just how talented they all are. Well done to all of them.”
