Happy hockey stars pleased with super season
It has been an impressive year for our hockey girls with another National Finals appearance, numerous tournament successes and national call ups demonstrating the school’s pedigree in the sport.
The 1st XI hockey team performed strongly in their fourth successive appearance at the National Finals which took place at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in March.
The girls were in a tough group with Repton School, Dean Close School and Framlingham College and despite some good play, 100% commitment and effort they returned empty handed. They were however the only team to score against Repton, the eventual winners. Their appearance at the Finals was made possible as they reached the tournament with an unbeaten record in the qualifying rounds during which they scored a remarkable 60 goals!
The girls’ strong form was also demonstrated as they saw off Withington Girls’ School and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls to retain the Greater Manchester Schools Under 18 title and they concluded their season by being crowned the Cheadle Sevens champions after defeating The King’s School Chester, Queen Ethelburgas, Rishworth School, Cheadle Hulme School and The King’s School in Macclesfield.
Our Under 13 team followed in their older schoolmates’ footsteps by beating Marple Hall School, Bramhall High School and Cheadle Hulme School to win the Stockport Schools’ tournament.
National recognition and medal glory for Lauren and Lily
Upper sixth pupils Lauren Hunt and Lily Wolstenholme were part of the England U18 Hockey team which secured third place at the European Youth Under 18 Championships with Lily scoring the winning “shuffle” to secure the Bronze medal.
Lauren’s impressive display resulted in her being selected for England’s U21 squad/Development Programme and she faced USA’s U21s at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in a number of matches during the Easter break before taking part in a training camp. She played alongside her sister Holly, a former pupil, as England won the series with a win and two draws.
Lily, who is continuing to put in strong performances for England’s U18s, was pleased to be selected to receive a £1,000 SportsAid Award from MyLotto24 after being nominated by England Hockey.
Looking back on the year, Miss Sharon Withington, Head of Hockey, said: “It has been a busy but rewarding season for our hockey girls and I am immensely pleased with what they have achieved. We have had impressive performances all across the pitch and the tournament successes are just reward for their efforts.
“The National Finals are the pinnacle of the hockey season and I was so proud of the way we qualified as we faced some strong opposition in the North and North West. Continuing to qualify for the Finals year after year is testament to the effort and commitment of both the girls and the team behind them and it is pleasing to reflect on another successful season.”
