Hockey girls ready for National Finals challenge

The 1st XI hockey team have been putting the finishing touches to their preparations for Stockport Grammar’s fourth successive appearance at the National Finals that take place this week. The team will be bidding to win the National crown to emulate their 2015 success.

The two day tournament gets underway on 1 March at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The girls face Repton School, Dean Close School and Framlingham College in the pool games and the winner and runner-up will face the top two from the other pool – which contains Trent College, Ardingly College, The Perse School and Millfield School – in the semi-finals.

It will be the fourth successive year the girls have qualified for the finals and they approach the tournament in good form after coming through the qualifying rounds unbeaten and scoring 60 goals!

The girls defeated Altrincham Grammar (6-1), Cheadle Hulme (2-1), Withington Girls (8-0) and Loreto Grammar (5-1) in the Greater Manchester Round before seeing off Kirkham Grammar (1-1), Queen Elizabeth Grammar (4-0), Merchant Taylors (16-0) and Kings Chester (5-1) in the North West Round.

In the group stage of the North Final the squad beat Hymers College 1-0 in a close opening game before finding their rhythm and the back of the net more often against Pocklington (4-0) and Sedburgh (3-0).

In the semi-final the girls again came up against Altrincham Grammar but a determined and resilient effort saw them earn a 3-0 victory. This meant that they would face Grammar School at Leeds in the final and a late winner from Morgan Hanson secured a hard fought 2-1 win and, with it, qualification to the National Finals.

The school would like to thank SilverFX Ltd, Mr Xia of Salzmann Ltd and Mr Hall of Swagelok for their sponsorship of the team.
