Holly scores in Commonwealth Games final to secure hockey gold

Old Stopfordian Holly Hunt (OS 2015) had a tournament to remember after she netted in the final of the 2022 Commonwealth Games to give England their first Commonwealth Games hockey gold.

England breezed through their pool with victories over Ghana (12-0), Canada (1-0), India (3-1) and Wales (5-0), with Holly bagging a goal in the opening game.

After winning a dramatic penalty shootout against New Zealand, the home nation advanced to the final at the University of Birmingham Hockey Centre to face Australia, a team one place ahead of them in the rankings.

A raucous capacity home crowd were celebrating as the former Stockport Grammar School pupil smartly controlled a cross to smash the ball home to break the deadlock. It was only the second goal the Hockeyroos had conceded at these Games. A second goal by Tess Howard saw England claim gold despite a late consolation for Australia.

Hockey 1st XI celebrate winning national championships

SGS Alumni Holly made her debut for Great Britain in 2019 and was named in the GB training squads for 2022. She was then subsequently selected for her first England games against Argentina in the FIH Hockey Pro League.

Holly’s appetite for gold goes back to her school days as she was part of the 1st XI that won the Girls’ Schools Championships in 2015.

Holly netted a double in a group game win against Framlingham College and enjoyed securing the national title with a 1-0 victory over Cranleigh School at the Olympic Park.
