Like, Literary explores global society in latest issue
The 2024 edition of ‘Like, Literary’, the school’s annual literary magazine, has been published and, this year, the publication offers an exploration of our global society by the SGS community.
A wide range of subjects are covered in this issue – these include literary criticism, psychology, medicine, culture and design technology.
Students Bethany Burton, Bethan Holding and Anna Collins, Old Stopfordian Natalie Kershaw (OS 1993) and English Teacher Mr Dan Cere penned pieces for the ‘Literary Criticism’ section, whilst in the ‘Contemporary Issues’ pages students Tom Farrelly and Edward Griffiths offer their insight.
Students Kiera Field, Elsa Mullins, Ella Hitchen and Jasmine Whittaker cover ‘Psychology‘ topics and Penny Horsford, editor of the ‘Creative Writing’ section, presents entries from First Years Eleanor Harding, Ben Lowe, Sophie May, Evie Lord and William Lord on ‘The Veil Lifts’.
The ‘Art, Art History and Architecture’ section features words from students Sara Watson, Grace Lorimer and Eliza Khan, and Head of Art Mr Richard Davies, whilst in ‘Geography‘, pieces by students Evie Poor and Freya Niven sit alongside ones by Head of Geography Mr Alex Cooke and Teacher of Biology Ms Laura Chandler.
Freya and Ms Chandler also drafted pieces for the ‘Biology‘ and Medicine section and these join articles by students Magdalena Zelazny, Frazer Assheton-Smith and Isaac Whittaker.
The ‘Business and Economics‘ sections features articles from Shania Broderick, Ahmar Malik, Danny Church and James Kelly-Cooper and, in the ‘Physics‘ section, students Dimitris Dimopoulos, Serena Grierson, Jack Rafter, Tom Morrison and Sachin Gholkar have penned pieces.
Frances Walmsley, Enoch Ajayi, Jonathan Hyde and Eliza Khan are the students that contributed to the ‘Film, Music and Culture’ section and in the ‘Design Technology‘ section Anjali Abraham, Lucia Smart, Luke Constantine-Williams and Bea Downing wrote articles.
English Teacher Ms Helen Roberts said: “The SGS writers have once more excelled themselves with their creativity, dedication and wide array of interests showcased in this year’s magazine.
“It truly is a feast; it covers art and economics for the first time and a range of quality scientific pieces alongside more traditionally ‘literary’ sections. The quality of all sections is exceptionally high and I encourage you to make a cup of tea, put your feet up and find something that piques your interest. You will not be disappointed!”
Head of English Mrs George Cope said of the writers: “They demonstrate their sharp understanding of, and concern for, our global future. Each section has been carefully crafted and edited by the students themselves, allowing them to pursue their own passions and demonstrate their voracious curiosity.”
