Old Stopfordians’ Golf Society review of the 2019 season

The Society had an enjoyable season with good weather for all the competitions. The Society has about 41 members on the circulation list but only 19 have played in at least one event this year.

We urgently need new younger blood to keep the Society flourishing.  If you would like to play please contact the Secretary whose details are below and confirm your interest.

The Founder’s Day competition at Stockport Golf Club had a very small turnout of five players. However the winner was Ian Hall with a stableford score of 33 points on a card playoff (a better second 9 by one point) over David Withington.

The match against Bramall Park Golf Club at the end of April unfortunately had to be cancelled because we could not raise enough players.

Old Hulmeians again organised the Inter-Old Boys Competition at Bramhall Golf Club on 3rd July in which teams of former pupils from six local schools took part.

Old Stops provided eight players this year. The best five stableford scores were taken from each team, the winners again being Old Hulmeians, with Old Maxonians second and Old Stops in penultimate place. Old Stops best individual scorer was Tony Fort on 28 points who was therefore the winner of the Inchley Bowl, on a card playoff over Richard Rimmington, David Withington and Ian Hall.

The annual Worth Trophy match against Old Maxonians was played at Knutsford Golf Club on 5th September in excellent conditions. Old Stops were able to raise 10 players with Old Maxonians having only five qualifying players. John Eccles, Old Maxonian and Knutsford member, kindly made all the arrangements with the Club.

The Trophy has been played for each year since 1999 and the venue for the last 11 years has been Knutsford Golf Club who make us very welcome. As Maxonians only had five players Stops generously allowed only the best five individual stableford scores from each team to count. Unfortunately Maxonians five scores were better than Stops best five scores so Old Maxonians won the Shield, which was probably just as well because they have temporarily mislaid the trophy from last year! Old Stops best scorers were Andy Roberts with 36 points and Richard Rimmington with 31 points.

The Oppida Cup and SGS Championship Shield competitions took place at Stockport Golf Club on Wednesday 25th September. 10 players competed for the Oppida Cup and nine schoolboys competed for the School Shield and Cup.

The weather was fine for the round which was fortunate compared with the bad weather on most of the other days in the week. The course was in excellent condition with fast true greens and the catering for the meal afterwards was up to its usual high standard. In the Oppida Cup, which is a medal competition, the winner was Andy Roberts with a net 73 who just beat Ian Hall with a net 74. Nathan Atkinson won the School Shield with 39 stableford points just beating Sam Hall and Alfie Anderson who both scored 38 points.

The winners of the various trophies were as follows:
