Old Stopfordians join pupils in Remembrance

More than eighty Old Stopfordians joined pupils for the Stockport Grammar School Remembrance Service on Monday 11th November 2019.

Pupils and guests were able to pay their respects to the one hundred and sixty Old Stopfordians who volunteered to fight in the First World War before conscription was introduced, and the fifty two Old Stopfordians who sadly lost their lives during the battle.

The service was led by Senior School Headmaster, Dr Paul Owen, with Upper Sixth Form pupils Jamie Carson, Almira Awan-Rutter, Archie Eady-Gurr and Olivia Clark reading poetry and accounts from the war.  The School Chaplain Rev. L E Leaver led the service prayers. The school’s Head Boy, Alexander Malone, and Head Girl, Kate Roberts, laid a wreath. Fourth Year pupil Patrick Owen played the Last Post before a two minute silence was observed.  Following the service in the school’s Main Hall, Old Stopfordians made their way to the Hallam Hall for a Remembrance lunch.Prior to lunch being served, our visitors received a talk from Stuart Helm, the SGS Archivist, who gave an illuminating talk on early memories of life at SGS before 1964.  Following Mr Helm’s speech Third Year pupils Alice Thomson, Thomas Keogh and Lilah Vidler gave talks on their experiences on a recent trip to the First World War Battlefields where wreaths were laid in memory of Old Stopfordians lost in battle at the Memorial for the Missing at Thiepval.

Guests were also treated to spectacular musical performances including Haydn’s Piano Trio in G Major (last movement) by Zoe Shah, Talia Zelhof and Olivia Dow.

Ella Moran gave a breath-taking operatic performance of Pergolesi’s Se tu m’ami, se sospiri, with Mr Dow on piano.

Zoe Shah also played Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro on the violin.

Talented SGS musicians performed The Last Post at each of the school’s Remembrance Services and in the community, with Fourth Year pupil Patrick Owen playing it at the main service and the Stockport Rugby Club service and Fifth Year pupil Emily Edwards playing at the Lower School assembly.  Lower Sixth Form pupil Nikolai Krywonos performed the piece at the Middle School assembly and Fourth Year pupil Isabelle Horne played it at the Junior School assembly and at Stepping Hill Hospital’s service.

Old Stopfordian, Reginald Holmes (OS 1949), also plays the organ each year for the school Remembrance Service.
