Stopfordians 4-15 Poynton
This game looked as it might throw in a surprisingly good result as Stops matched Poynton in all departments for the first 30 minutes.
The defence, with Adrian Chandler moving into the back three, held Poynton at bay for long spells and some good finishing from the Stops’ attack kept the goal difference to no more than one or two goals until 10 minutes into the second quarter.
But a brief flurry of goals from Poynton just before half-time left Stops trailing with a hill to climb. And with a squad of only 11 players, some of whom were carrying injuries, the hill proved too steep.
Poynton looked sharp and produced a number of well worked scoring opportunities, steadily increasing their lead. Stops continued to chase ground balls and to work hard in all parts of the field, but could make little impression on their well drilled opponents.
Phil Hall, Peter Hibbert and Peter Woodhead showed a tremendous amount of determination in midfield, but despite the team’s efforts the opposition were just too good.
A rest day next Saturday is followed the week after by a key home game against Nottingham. A full strength Stops’ team should be looking to take points.
