Summer Concert spectacular in the sunshine

The Music department were straight back into action during the first week of the new term as they held the Summer Concert.

The beautiful weather was timed perfectly for the show and a full house enjoyed performances in a wide range of styles. Second Orchestra opened the programme with ‘Scheherezade’, which included a wonderful virtuosic violin solo from Third Year Oscar Williams, and a delightful soft rock version of Mozart’s ‘Stay With Me’.

A celebratory atmosphere for the rest of the concert came from the Brass Ensemble’s performance of ‘The Muppet Show’ and ‘Grand Old Duke Of York’, the latter of which saw audience participation which had everyone in stitches.

Vox, led by Mrs Matthews, were up next and they performed ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Try Everything’ with lovely solos from several members of the choir.

The first half was brought to a close by the Senior Jazz Band, led by Mr Hamilton, and Pippa Brown’s haunting saxophone solo in ‘My One And Only Love’ will live long in the memory.

Mr Kennedy’s Junior Band opened the second half and the ensemble’s numbers were so strong that there was only just enough room on the stage for all of them. Having not had a rehearsal since the previous term, the pupils produced a rousing start with performances hinting at influences from Africa and China. Special mention must go to Upper Sixth pupil Jess Lloyd who gave a cameo appearance on the tam tam in ‘Ming Court’.

First Orchestra, led by Mr Dow, who also had not had a rehearsal since before Easter, then gave an extremely accomplished performance of the last two movements of Schubert’s ‘5th Symphony’ before the Junior Jazz Band demonstrated their excellent musicianship with Oscar Williams and Daniel Vincent showing versatility by playing multiple instruments.

The concert was brought to a close with the Big Band performing popular classics ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight’ and ‘Eye Of The Tiger’.

The Music department are quickly back in action again for this week’s Leavers’ Concert.
