Apply to the Senior School

Pupils in a Chemistry lesson

Choosing a Senior School for your child is an important decision for parents. We want to make the experience as simple and stress-free as possible.

We offer open events, taster days, and personalised tours for parents. This way, you can see SGS and get a sense of the environment your son or daughter could enjoy.

If you would like to apply for a place for your child, please contact the Admissions team.

The school’s Terms and Conditions can be found towards the bottom of the Policies page.

Cancellation Notice and Cancellation Form

Entrance examination

Every child who applies to join the First Year at age eleven takes the entrance exam. The entrance exam for First Year admission in September 2026 is on Tuesday 13th January 2026.

The deadline for applications has now passed, but we understand that sometimes deadlines can be missed. If you’re still interested in joining Stockport Grammar School, we encourage you to get in touch with our Admissions team who will be happy to explore how we can accommodate your application.

Please see our entrance examination page for more information.

Post-examination meeting

An informal meeting forms the final stage of the admissions procedure.

Those invited for a post-examination meeting will be notified by email within two weeks of the entrance exam. You and your child will meet with one of the following members of our senior leadership team:

    • Mrs Sarah Capewell, Head
    • Mrs Jackie Smith, Deputy Head (Staffing and Co-Curricular)
    • Mr Ian Kendrick, Deputy Head (Academic)
    • Mrs Jo White, Deputy Head (Safeguarding and Wellbeing)
    • Mrs Heather Ashton, Head of Lower School
    • Mrs Jude Fitzgerald, Head of Middle School

Headteacher’s reports

We ask every child’s primary school head teacher to submit a confidential report about the applicant. Your child’s chances will not be damaged if a report is not provided.

Offer of a place

The letter will say if your child:

  • has been offered a fee-paying place
  • has been offered a place with financial assistance
  • has been placed on a reserve list from which further offers may be made
  • has not been offered a place

You will have an opportunity to visit the school again after places have been offered.

Sometimes, we have places available in other years. Please check with the Admissions department to confirm availability before filling out the online form.
