Apply to the Senior School

Choosing a school for your child as they approach Senior School age is an important decision for parents and at Stockport Grammar School we would like to make the experience as simple, comfortable and stress-free as possible.

We host a number of open events and taster days as well as offering bespoke tours for parents so that you can view the surroundings and get a feel for the environment that your son or daughter could enjoy.

We welcome your application for a place for your child by completing an online admission form. A fee of £40 per child is applicable upon submission of the online form.

For entry other than at 11+, please speak to the Admissions department before completing the online form.

Entrance examination

The 11+ entrance examination is taken by every child who applies to join the First Year at age eleven.

Applications for this year’s 11+, which was due to take place on Wednesday 13th January 2021, are now closed. Applicants have been informed about the postponement and will be contacted with new arrangements as soon as they are known. However, if you would like to discuss September entry, please contact the Admissions Department. Admissions Officer Mrs Margaret Connor can be contacted at or 0161 419 2409.

We recognise that the academic progress of some children will have been adversely affected by the period of school closure. Please be reassured that the school will take this into account when looking at Entrance Examination performances and making admissions decisions.

Please see our entrance examination page for more information.

Post-examination meeting

An informal meeting forms the final stage of the admissions procedure.

Those invited for a post-examination meeting will be notified by email within two weeks of the entrance exam. You and your child will meet with one of the following members of our senior management team:

    • Dr Paul Owen, Headmaster
    • Mrs Jackie Smith, Deputy Head (Staffing and Co-Curricular)
    • Mrs Donna Harris, Deputy Head (Academic)
    • Mrs Jo White, Deputy Head (Pastoral)
    • Mrs Helen Lawson, Head of Lower School
    • Mr Chris Wright, Admissions Co-ordinator

Headteacher’s reports

We ask every child’s primary school head teacher to submit a confidential report about the applicant. Your child’s chances will not be damaged if a report is not provided.

Offer of a place

The letter will say if your child:

  • has been offered a fee-paying place
  • has been offered a place with financial assistance
  • has been placed on a reserve list from which further offers may be made
  • has not been offered a place

You will be given the opportunity to visit the school again after places have been offered.

Entry to other years

On occasions we have availability of places in other years. Please contact the Admissions department to confirm availability before completing the online admissions form.
