Old Stopfordian President

Graham left Stockport Grammar School in 1983 and went on to study History at Sidney Sussex, Cambridge University before pursuing a career in Law with Slaughter & May where he became a Partner. After Cambridge, Graham briefly revisited SGS to cover a leave of absence and teach History alongside the members of staff, including Nicholas Henshall, who had inspired his love of the subject. It is to History that Graham has returned in recent years, and he is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Cambridge. Graham is married with two sons and he and his family live in Cambridge.

Graham Earles (OS 1983) said:

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to get involved with the school once again. There are many ways for Old Stopfordians to stay connected with the school and each other. The Summer Barbecue is a relaxed lunchtime event for Old Stopfordians and families, and provides a chance to say goodbye to retiring members of staff. The Annual Dinner – usually in March – is a way for Old Stopfordians formally to mark the passing of another year, and takes place in the Hallam Hall (or the Library to some (!)). Old Stopfordians are also very welcome to attend the Senior School Carol Concert, the Founder’s Day Service, and the Remembrance Reunion. Dates for all these events will be publicised on the school website. The External Relations Office will also be happy to help Old Stopfordians arrange ‘ad hoc’ reunions at the school for particular groups of friends who may wish to return together.

“I also encourage all Old Stopfordians to consider attending one of the meetings of the new Stopfordian Committee. These take place termly, and the dates will be announced on the school website. The main aim of the Stopfordian Committee is to encourage the development of connections between alumni, and between alumni and the school – and all ideas to that end will be appreciated.

“Old Stopfordians also continue to come together to play golf with regular fixtures, and anyone interested in joining in is encouraged to contact the Old Stopfordian Golf Society secretary, David Withington (OS 1983). David’s contact details can be found on the Golf Society page.

“I look forward very much to meeting as many Old Stopfordians as possible at future events.”

The Old Stopfordian President represents Old Stopfordians within the school community and is a member of The Stopfordian Committee. All Old Stopfordians and parents of former pupils are warmly invited to attend The Stopfordian Committee which is held termly. The Stopfordian Committee encourages the development of stronger connections with and between alumni and finds ways in which the school can help alumni and support reunions.

The next Stopfordian Committee takes place 11am-12pm on Saturday 22nd June in the Governors’ Room. The meeting is prior to the Old Stopfordians’ Summer Barbecue which takes place from 12pm-3pm. We would be delighted to see all Old Stopfordians at the meeting and/or the barbecue. Please contact the External Relations Office or 0161 419 2408 if you would like to attend.
