Head’s Welcome

Head Sarah Capewell talking with pupils

Welcome to Stockport Grammar Senior School.

We are a school that is a genuine community, a family, where pupils feel welcomed and valued. Children join us at 11 years old from a wide range of local maintained primary and independent junior schools. SGS also has an extensive bursary programme.

SGS is a long-established school, founded in 1487, and we are proud of our history and our traditions, however we are a school that is also looking to the future and much has changed since our first inception. We are a co-educational, independent day school, which offers a modern, forward-looking approach to education so that we can ensure that our pupils are able to leave the school confident and ready for their next step, whatever that might be.

We believe that it is important for pupils to develop a range of skills and characteristics while at school through a broad and wide-ranging education. Our academic outcomes are excellent: pupils achieve superb exam results through small class sizes, innovative and highly skilled teaching and individual pastoral support. But in addition to this, the huge range of co-curricular opportunities allows pupils to develop their talents and perform at a high level in their chosen field, whether that is music, sport, drama or one of our many other activities.

We would love for you to visit us to find out more about the school and to experience the supportive and encouraging environment that makes SGS such a special place. Throughout the year, we offer school day visits, open day events and taster sessions and we invite you to come and see for yourself! But if you are not able to visit in person, please explore our website where there is a wealth of information to help you learn more about us.

If you have questions about any aspect of school life, please do not hesitate to ask us and we will be happy to help.
