John Dutton (OS 1949)

The school was saddened to receive the news that Mr. John Dutton (OS 1949) passed away on Friday 12th June 2020.

As an Old Stopfordian, John was a regular supporter of the Stockport Grammar School Bursary Fund for many years. The school is most grateful for John’s support.

Obituary in memory of John Dutton

John was born on 25th November, 1932 on his mother’s own birthday, he was the second son having an elder brother Arthur and a younger brother Harry both of whom were old boys at Stockport Grammar. He also had a sister Marjorie.

His nephew Geoffrey (also an old boy) said at his funeral that John had recounted a couple of stories of his time at Stockport Grammar.

He followed his brother Arthur and a cousin, also called Arthur to the school, when he started he was asked his name and when he replied “Dutton” the master said, “you’d better sit at the front”

He also recalled an incident when they sent a fellow pupil on roller skates along the corridor leading to the Bursar’s office, unfortunately the door was not secured and the pupil went flying into the office – an incident which resulted in the cane for all concerned.

John was a very loyal Old Stopfordian and contributed financially throughout his life.

His school days were very fondly remembered and he forged friendships there that lasted throughout his life.

He died peacefully at Sunrise Care Home in Bramhall on 12th June, 2020 and is sadly missed by his sister Marjorie, his nieces and nephews and numerous friends, ex-colleagues and Free Masons.
