Mr Christopher H. Holt (OS 1960)

Stockport Grammar School was saddened to receive notice of the death of Old Stopfordian, Mr Christopher H. Holt (OS 1960), at his home in Haslingfield, near Cambridge, on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.  The School was notified by fellow Old Stopfordian Mr Frank ‘Neville’ Savage, who also shared the following:

For some years, he had been struggling with Parkinsons Disease.

He had a Chemistry degree from Nottingham University and taught chemistry until retiring.

Whilst at school, he was a member of the lighting team for plays performed in  the Hallam Hall and continued this interest at University and beyond.

Mrs Holt also shared:

Chris remembered SGS with affection and a few teachers especially.  Following SGS he went to Nottingham University and took a Chemistry degree. He then joined the Teachers for East Africa scheme and completed his PGCE in Kampala, Uganda. Then he followed 2 years teaching in Manyara and Iringa in Tanzania before returning to the UK in 1966. He then taught at the High School for Bous in Cambridge until comprehensive reorganisation in 1974 when he took up the post of Head of Science and Chemistry teachers at Sawston Village College.

He was a very good teacher and teacher of chemistry, much respected as demonstrated by the number of past pupils and teachers at his thanksgiving.

After retirement he continued his love of woodworking with cabinet making and boat making courses and also running classes at U3A, mostly chemistry or sciences.

He leaves behind his wife, Mrs Holt and their three children and grandchildren.

A burial was held at Haslingfield Church, followed by a Thanksgiving for his life in the Village Hall, on Friday 20th January.
