Cinderella brings a seasonal sparkle

The cast of the 2023 Senior School pantomime 'Cinderella'

The Drama department’s fabulous production of the pantomime ‘Cinderella’ had the Main Hall audience in stitches.

The show was the result of the hard work of over 100 pupils – on stage and behind the scenes.

Along with lots of fun, it focussed on the heart-warming messages of sincerity, perseverance and truth, and brought together pupils from First Year to Sixth Form.

The audience were transported to a magical world as Alice Thomson as Cinderella, Sachin Gholkar as the Prince, Mason Peters as Devilla, Ben Smethurst as Beryl, Toby Gleave as Cheryl and Hannah Johnson as Buttons led the cast in a sparky re-telling of one of the world’s best-loved stories.

Specially created artwork from SGS Illustration Club pupils was also projected on to the stage for certain scenes.

Upper Sixth student Alice Thomson said: “I felt so grateful to be chosen to play Cinderella. It meant so much to me to be part of something so brilliant and fun, especially with it being my last play at SGS!”

Lower Sixth student Ben Smethurst added: “The chance to perform and spread happiness, even if it makes people just a tiny bit happier, is a feeling of pure joy. I’m so glad I was a part of the school panto and that I got to share the sense of community and joy with the rest of the cast, the teachers and the families and friends of everyone I worked with.

“A massive thank you to all of the Drama teachers who put everything together.”

Head of Drama Mr Matt King-Sayce reflected: “I am very proud that the pupils’ hard work since rehearsals began in September has paid off.

“We performed to three packed out audiences who absolutely loved it – not to mention the envy that many of our female audience members had for the way Mason performed in his six-inch heels!

“Many thanks to all those who helped to make the show a success!”
