Energetic and entertaining author talk inspires First Year readers

Pupils pose with books alongside author Phil Earle

Best-selling, award-winning writer Phil Earle gave a wonderfully energetic, interactive and entertaining author talk in the Library to First Years.

Phil has written 24 books – he actually gifted us a pre-publication copy of his 25th book! – and he spoke about his route into reading, which included a love of football magazines, comics and graphic novels.

He told us how he fell into writing after a spell working as a children’s bookseller and devouring a stream of children’s books.

Phil also discussed with pupils where writing ideas can come from and how quickly you can find a story and then develop it if you keep asking yourself: ‘What if…?’. He then shared how he put this into practice to write his latest books ‘When The Sky Falls’, ‘While The Storm Rages’ and ‘Until The Road Ends’.

Phil radiated the message that writing and reading is a joy and that we are all readers when we find the book for us – and libraries are a brilliant place to get exploring! Many of his book recommendations are in the Library for pupils to discover.

Phil delighted in answering questions at the end of the sessions and speaking with pupils during the lunch time book signing. Many of our First Years are hopefully now inspired to get started on their new book or to borrow a Library copy.
