Ensembles delight Winter Concert audience

Musicians performing at the 2024 Winter Concert

Eight ensembles displayed their musical talent at the first concert of the calendar year – the Winter Concert.

Brass Ensemble welcomed the audience into the Dining Hall with a trio of great songs: ‘The Muppets Show’ by Jim Henson and Sam Pottle, Alan Fernie’s ‘Stäl Himmel’ and ‘Anything Goes’ by Cole Porter.

Junior Percussion performed two pieces created by the school’s Peripatetic Music staff member Mr Landon called ‘Samba’ and ‘Sword Fight’ before Junior Strings took to the stage to deliver Caroline Lumsden and Ben Attwood’s ‘Wizards United’.

The first half of the concert was concluded by The Dysfunktionals performing Bart Howard’s ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’ by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers.

Upon the audience returning to take their seats following refreshments in Edmonds’ Café, Second Orchestra played Richard Ling’s ‘Jazz Train’ and ‘Aragonaise’ from ‘Carmen’ by Georges Bizet.

‘At Last’ by Etta James and ‘500 Miles High’ by Chick Corea were beautifully performed by S Club Diminished Seventh before Junior Woodwind delivered a couple of songs from the movies: ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ by The Tokens and Monty Norman’s ‘The James Bond Theme’.

The wonderful evening of musical entertainment ended with Senior Percussion performing ‘Gear Train’ – another piece crafted by Mr Landon.

The next SGS Music concert is the Spring Concert on 12th March and there are also free Monday Afternoon Recital Series events taking place on 5th February, 4th March and 25th March.
