Friendship, fun and fundraising – celebrating the SPA year

Members of the SPA at Sports Day 2023

Thanks to the amazing Stopfordian Parents’ Association volunteers, each year the SGS community of parents and pupils comes together to have fun while raising funds to enhance the children’s school experience. Every parent is automatically a member and invited to attend the AGM on the 28th September (6.30pm in the Governors’ Room).

Here is a look back at some of what the SPA got up to last year:

Each year the SPA organise a hugely popular Quiz Night and the fantastically festive Christmas Fair, which in 2022 raised just over £10,000.

The second annual Summer Soiree saw attendees dress to impress as they raised funds for the Bursary scheme in the fabulous surroundings of the Manchester Art Gallery.

Junior School discos, the Junior School Christmas cards project, uniform sales throughout the year and refreshments for the Junior School’s sports days have all been organised by the SPA.

The SPA decide where to allocate the funds raised and these have been put to excellent use:

In the Senior School, the Sport and Music departments have benefitted from funding, the Art and Design Technology departments were given money for cameras to be used on trips and in the classroom, and pupils have enjoyed using new chess sets purchased by the SPA.

In the Junior School, funds were contributed to the outdoor area at the back of the Nursery building, plants and pots have been purchased for each classroom – as requested by the Eco-Committee, and contributions have been made towards the marvellous mosaics at the main entrance and the Infants entrance.

The SPA also funded books for the Prize Giving and prizes for the annual Year 6 charity afternoon – as well as sorting out the visit and signed book session of author Cressida Cowell for Year 4 pupils.

Finally, at Christmas time they contributed towards the Infants Christmas presents and funded the performance of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ for Junior School pupils.

Our thanks to all the volunteers and to the Chair of the SPA Lisa Lord as she retires from the role. Parents can become involved by joining the SPA committee, attending meetings and helping to organise events and activities. Any involvement, however small, is most welcome and will benefit the pupils of the school. If you would like to know more about the SPA please contact spa@stockportgrammar.co.uk.
