SGS Year 5 Exhibition showcases amazing artwork

Pupils from local primary schools with their entries for the 2024 Year 5 Art Competition

The 11th annual Stockport Grammar School Year 5 Art Competition welcomed 84 artists from 11 local primary schools to an exhibition evening to showcase their work to family and friends.

The theme of ‘self-portrait’ sparked the imagination of the young artists to produce some unique work, with the children interpreting the brief in a range of medias – this included photography, out of this world pastels and multi-layered collage. The judges were bowled over by the high quality and care put into the pieces and found it very difficult to choose winners. All artists were congratulated on being chosen to represent their schools.

As with all competitions, there had to be an overall winner and Agatha K from Great Moor Junior School captured the judge’s attention with a portrait that combined colour, pattern and complex construction in an ambitious piece that reflected her understanding of the work by the artist referenced.

Runners-up prizes were awarded to Alexandra M from Gorsey Bank Primary School and Noah K from Alexandra Park Primary School. Alexandra created a portrait that was bursting with colour and pattern, showing a great control of media and Noah produced a portrait that featured the skilful use of pencil crayon, combining text and image successfully.

Head of Art Mr Richard Davies commented: “It was fantastic seeing the range of media and artist references that had been used to respond to the theme of self-portrait. The standard was incredibly high and all the children who entered can be very proud of their work.”

During the evening, the children also enjoyed taking part in art activities led by SGS Art students and sampled the delicious home-made bakes from the SGS kitchen. All the artists went home with a small gift to help them continue to capture their creativity for others to enjoy.
