Year 5 artists wow with self-portraits

Art Competition 2022

Now in its ninth year, the Stockport Grammar School Year 5 Art Competition, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, welcomed 89 artists from 12 local primary schools to an exhibition evening on Thursday 24th March to show their work to family and friends.

The theme of ‘self-portrait’ produced some spectacular work, with the children interpreting the brief in a range of ways to create imaginative artwork from painted canvas portraits of ‘School Dinner’ times to collage textile cushion creations. The judges were bowled over by the high quality and care put into the pieces and found it very difficult to choose winners – all artists were congratulated on being chosen to represent their schools.

However there had to be an overall winner and Christy Ho of Oldfield Brow Primary School took first place, winning a boxed art set and sketchbook. Her Picasso inspired piece caught the eyes of the judges for its combination of bold shapes and tonal mixing, thus creating such an ambitious and successful piece.

Runners-up were Rafferty Paysden from Pownall Hall School, who created an exciting collagraph print that combined a wide range of textured surfaces and Oliva Avendano of Lady Barn House School whose 3D, colourful applique portrait in fabric captured the eye and imagination.

Highly Commended were Freya-Leigh Souter from St Thomas’ C of E Primary School for her playful piece ‘School Dinners’ and Harrison Simmens from Alexandra Park Primary School for his sensitive and skilful piece ‘Be More Rashford’.

During the evening, the children also enjoyed taking part in art activities led by SGS Fifth Year Art students.

Artists went home with a ‘goody bag’ provided by sponsors Brewin Dolphin, including art equipment to help them continue to capture their creativity for others to enjoy.
