We are delighted to be ranked the top independent school in the North West for sport by School Sport Magazine in their annual Top 200 schools list.

The rankings were created by School Sport Magazine using the sporting results of each school’s teams. Congratulations to our pupils on the motivation, skill and teamwork they have demonstrated and to our Sport, PE, Health and Fitness department along with our specialist sport coaches for this remarkable achievement. SGS provides exceptional sporting opportunities for every child with an inclusive approach focused on ‘Be the Best you can’ and over 30 sports on offer.

Last school year, the Under 14 Netball team secured third place at the prestigious National Schools Finals, the Under 15 Rugby squad reached the Quarter Finals of the National Cup, the Under 15 Hockey team reached the Quarter Finals of the National Plate and the Under 13 Girls’ Football team reached the Quarter Finals of the Sisters n Sport National Plate Competition.

Two SGS pupils have also received the fantastic news that they will be competing in swimming trials for a place on Great Britain’s Olympic team.

Fifth Years Colleen Devlin and Eliza Pinkstone will be competing in April 2021 at the London Aquatic Centre. We wish them the best of luck for the trials.

Whilst our pupils have been remote learning and to aid their development, the Sport, PE, Health and Fitness department have created the ‘SGS Talks Sport’ series where they speak to figures from the world of sport who can impart their knowledge to our pupils.

The inspiring series has brought advice from sporting stars including England cricketer Sir Alistair Cook; Sally Gunnell, British former track and field athlete who won the 1992 Olympic gold medal in the 400 metres hurdles; and Nick Cox, Manchester United’s Head of Academy.

Our dedicated sport department is working hard to provide ‘at home’ sporting challenges for all pupils in the Senior and Junior Schools. The pupils, staff and parents are enjoying clocking up the miles for a race around the world and perfecting their skills across a range of sports including:

To nurture the passion and talent of our pupils there are eight specialist staff in the Sport, PE, Health and Fitness department who are supported by over twenty specialist sports coaches and academic staff who run and coach school teams.

SGS delivers lessons, co-curricular activities and competitions with the benefit of excellent sports facilities, including an all-weather pitch, extensive grassed areas, a fully equipped Sports Hall plus gymnasium, a 25m swimming pool, netball and tennis courts, climbing wall and fitness room. The opportunities for Sport, PE, Health and Fitness at SGS are almost limitless with sports from dance to climbing to football and fencing and the option to study sport at IGCSE and A-level.
